Biennale People - Watching the Watchers
Providing an international platform for art, architecture, cinema, music, theatre and dance, the Venice Biennale always draws crowds of aficionados, enthusiasts and the curious. The opportunity to observe, interact and engage in these events is a unique experience, allowing the visitor to be involved in an exclusive club, slightly mysterious, almost otherworldly. Often, we come away bemused yet still satisfied by the experience. And every visit is different, enticing us to return repeatedly.
For the street photographer, a people watcher, the Biennale of art and architecture is a dream. A chance to wander among, and capture, players upon a strange stage, whilst seeking out characters, behaviours and reactions. As artworks are contemplated, installations navigated and displays perused, the photographer’s eye is very often drawn from the spectacle to the observers themselves, caught in moments of distraction, respite or contemplation. The watchers become the watched.
‘Biennale People’ is a light-hearted, and at times humorous, street photography project focussing on the public attending the art and architecture Biennale events in Venice from 2011 to 2025. Here, the observer, passer-by or worker becomes more a than mere extra in the scene. For a moment, now frozen in time, they have become the attraction; an installation in themselves, and worthy of their own stage.
Featuring over 30 black and white prints, here is a small selection of what is on at the exhibition from 25th October to 9th November at the Kunst Depot Venezia (www.veneziakunstdepot.com). For more details, please contact me: andy@monochromevenice.com
