Another unique element to Venice urban planning are the 'sotoporteghi' or tunnelled walkways that link calle and campi, provide sheltered canal side embankments and landing grounds to offload merchandise to support the shops, bars and restaurants.   Fascinating structures in their own right, the contrast of light and shadow allow for natural backlit silhouettes against those who pass through, and a timeless, mysterious intrigue of a bygone age.
